A true comfort food classic, this Patty Melt combines juicy, seasoned ground beef with rich, melty cheeses and perfectly caramelized onions, all grilled between slices of buttery Texas toast. It’s bold, satisfying, and surprisingly easy to prepare.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ cup butter, divided
- 1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced
- 12 slices thick-cut sandwich bread (Texas toast recommended)
- 6 slices American cheese
- 6 slices Swiss cheese
- 2 tbsp yellow mustard
- Salt and cracked black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions
Heat 4 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, season generously with salt and pepper, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Sauté for 15–20 minutes, stirring frequently, until onions are deeply golden and caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside. - Prepare the Beef Patties
In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently with your hands until evenly combined. Flatten the mixture into the bowl and divide into 6 equal portions. Shape each portion into a thin oval patty slightly larger than your bread slices (they will shrink during cooking). - Assemble the Bread Base
Spread about 1 teaspoon of yellow mustard on 6 slices of bread. Set aside the remaining 6 slices for the tops. - Cook the Patties
Preheat a griddle or large skillet to medium heat. Sear each patty for about 3 minutes per side. After flipping, top each patty with a generous spoonful of caramelized onions, followed by a slice of American cheese and a slice of Swiss cheese. Continue cooking until cheese is melted and patties are fully cooked (about 6 minutes total). - Build the Patty Melts
Place each loaded patty onto a slice of mustard-spread bread. Wipe down the griddle with a paper towel using a spatula to avoid burning yourself. - Grill the Sandwiches
Add 2 tablespoons of butter to the griddle and spread evenly. Place the sandwiches onto the griddle and top with the remaining bread slices. Grill for 2–3 minutes until the bottom is golden brown. Flip each sandwich, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter, and grill the second side until equally crisp and golden. - Serve
Transfer sandwiches to a cutting board, slice in half, and serve immediately. Enjoy them hot and melty with your favorite side.
